Subject matter:
A systematic course in reading Maya hieroglyphic writing accompanied by an introduction to Maya linguistics. It comprises a historical overview of decipherment and a comprehensive introduction into the calendar, structure and linguistics of Maya Hieroglyphic Writing (phonology, orthography grammar, syntax). It further provides the analytical techniques for the study of Maya texts and is supplemented by a basic vocabulary. The course is structured into chapters which contain particular lessons in electronic form. The Chapters gradually introduce into the Maya writing system with detailed explanations and translations. Interactive exercises supplemented to each chapter enable participants to check their knowledge. The goal of the course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge to be able to read and understand ancient Maya texts. The course includes also both “real” and virtual workshops.

Form:
Lectures and exercises (homework); equivalent of 90 hrs of traditional classes. Beginning: Tests after each unit and written final exam, individual tasks, workshops.
